Dept. of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics (NT)

The Northern Territory Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics delivers quality infrastructure, services and systems to support the NT’s economic and social growth.  The Department’s responsibilities include the development of safe and efficient transport systems including management of driver education, licensing, road safety, cycling policy and legislation.

NT Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics + Cycle Aware

Cycling is important in the Northern Territory, with participation surveys indicating that more people cycle (per capita) in the NT than elsewhere in Australia. The department has been working to increase awareness of cyclists amongst new and existing drivers through updates to the NT Road Users’ Handbook, the NT Learner Driver Guide and the NT Heavy Vehicle Drivers’ Handbook. The NT’s screen based learner driver knowledge test also includes questions on sharing the road with cyclists and practical competencies include demonstrating appropriate on road behaviour around cyclists. By developing a knowledge and practice base for interacting with cyclists throughout driver training, the Cycle Aware project will provide an evidence base for further incorporating cycle awareness in driver education and training in the Territory.
